Iona Ramsay, alumna of the UCSIA Summer School 2024, recently successfully defended her PhD and has now started a postdoctoral position at Cardiff University.
Her doctoral dissertation, defended in April, is titled “From Anti-Communism to Illiberalism: Romanian ‘Spiritual Resistance’ to Communism and the Rise of Transnational Populism (1960s–2020s).” The thesis examines how narratives of spiritual resistance to communism in Romania have evolved and how they intersect with contemporary forms of transnational populism.
The dissertation was examined by Manuela Boatcă and Brandon Gallaher. As part of her postdoctoral research at Cardiff University, Iona is now working on developing the dissertation into a monograph.
Reflecting on her experience, Iona describes the UCSIA Summer School as one of the highlights of her PhD journey.
The UCSIA Summer School warmly congratulates Iona Ramsey on the successful defense of her doctorate and wishes her every success in this next stage of her academic career.
