Marion Burkimsher, alumna of the UCSIA Summer School 2009, recently published a new journal article examining trends in religiosity among young adults in contemporary Europe.

Co-authored with José Pereira Coutinho and Ben Clements, the article—Secularization or revival; polarization or convergence? An Assessment of Trends in the Religiosity of Young Adults in 21st-Century Europe—appeared in the Journal of Religion in Europe (vol. 18, 2025). The study offers a comparative analysis of religious change among young Europeans, engaging key debates on secularization, religious revival, and generational dynamics.

Marion Burkimsher is an independent researcher affiliated with the University of Lausanne. After completing a Master’s degree in Demography at the University of Geneva in 2008, she has contributed to a range of research projects, particularly in the areas of fertility trends and religious change. She has presented her work at several international conferences.

Earlier in her academic career, Marion completed a PhD at the University of Manchester on the internal hydrology of an Alpine glacier. While seemingly distant from her current research, this background reflects a long-standing geographical approach to scholarship—marked by close attention to dynamic processes and variations across time and space.
